The originally proposed bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Depending on who makes the request, the court order could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites. The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a crime, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison for ten such infringements within six months. The bill also gives immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement.

I hope the protest will work, and that the law proposals will be withdrawn. I hope the Internet and the World Wide Web stay Free.

La wikipedia in lingua inglese, la più grande enciclopedia mai creata al mondo, si auto-sospenderà mercoledì 18 gennaio 2012. L’atto è una protesta per far desistere la Camera dei Rappresentanti ed il Senato degli Stati Uniti dall’approvare due proposte di legge chiamate SOPA e PIPA.
Dalla pagina di wikipedia relativa a SOPA:
La legge permetterebbe inoltre al Dipartimento di Giustizia e ai titolari di copyright di procedere legalmente contro i siti web accusati di diffondere o facilitare le infrazioni del diritto d’autore. A seconda del richiedente, le sanzioni potrebbero includere il divieto ai network pubblicitari o ai siti di gestione dei pagamenti (come, ad esempio, Paypal) d’intrattenere rapporti d’affari con il sito accusato delle infrazioni, il divieto ai motori di ricerca di mantenere attivi link verso il sito in questione e la richiesta agli Internet Service Provider di bloccare l’accesso al sito web.

La legge, qualora approvata, renderebbe lo streaming di contenuti vincolati da copyright un reato [con pena massima di 5 anni di reclusione per 10 infrazioni in 6 mesi].

Spero che la protesta funzioni e le proposte di legge vengano abbandonate. Spero che Internet ed il web rimangano Liberi.
